One way of keeping the focal point in an image is to have the other areas of the image contrast with the focal point. If the focus is very clean, simple and smooth then the background can contrast by being very busy and active. This allows the focus to go to the focal point. If the focal point is very busy and has lots of details and activities then having the background simple will allow the focal point to draw the viewer in.
